Location
Little Egg Harbor Township occupies a 49.5 square mile area in southern Ocean County. The township is bordered on the northeast by Stafford Township and Eagleswood Township. The southeastern edge of the mainland is shared by Little Egg Harbor Bay and Great Bay. Little Egg Harbor Township surrounds Tuckerton Borough, which is located in the center of the township. The western border is Bass River Township in Burlington County. The municipality lies approximately 60 miles from Philadelphia and 90 miles from New York City.
The township is bisected by County Route 539, which is the main north-south thoroughfare. The Garden State Parkway cuts across the north-central portion of Little Egg Harbor Township and Route 9 crosses the central portion of the township. The area south of Route 9 is extensively developed with much of the tidal marsh area bulkheaded for lagoon subdivisions. However, the southern portion of the township was acquired by the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife. A small portion of Little Egg Harbor Township is federally owned and is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife.
The most developed portions of the township are centered around the areas of Giffordtown, West Tuckerton, Parkertown, Mystic Island and Osborn Island. The area north of the Garden State Parkway remains extensively forested with few inhabitants.
